A Boy from Tupelo - The Complete 1953-55 Recordings é o primeiro trabalho da RCA e Sony, em parceria com a Follow That Dream, a reunir de forma oficial todas as gravações disponíveis do período inicial da carreira de Elvis, incluindo raridades que se pensava terem sido perdidas para sempre. O CD triplo é o acompanhamento de um livro contando em detalhes a ascensão do Rei do Rock ao estrelado mundial. O trabalho não está mais no catálogo da gravadora.
Ao completar 18 anos, no início de 1953, o jovem Elvis Presley já demonstrava um grande interesse pela música. Com os estudos básicos terminados e trabalhando como eletricista para a Crown Electric, Co., as andanças no caminhão da empresa por Memphis lhe permitiam observar com frequência o grande movimento de artistas em busca de sucesso no pequeno estúdio localizado na rua Union, o Sun, uma pequena divisão da Memphis Recording Service aberta apenas três anos antes, e isso lhe chamava a atenção.
Elvis não era estranho à música, principalmente a Gospel e a Rockabilly, gêneros que ele mais apreciava. De fato, o Rei do Rock já havia ganho um pequeno prêmio pela obtenção do terceiro lugar em um concurso musical em 1945, com apenas dez anos de idade, onde cantara uma versão emocionante de "Old Shep". Em entrevistas dadas anos após a morte do cantor, JD Sumner sempre contou que aquele garoto comparecia assiduamente aos cultos em que ele se apresentava com os Blackwood Brothers em Memphis desde 1948, e que frequentemente os abordava com perguntas aparentemente sem sentido sobre música.
Depois de criar coragem e de pedir um adiantamento salarial para seu chefe, Elvis pegou seu violão e foi até o Sun Studio para gravar um acetato com duas faixas em 18 de julho de 1953 (data disputada por documentos que apresentam o acontecido em 22 de agosto daquele ano).
Sua desculpa era de que aquilo seria um presente para o aniversário de sua mãe, o que hoje soa estranho por sabermos que Gladys nascera em 25 de abril e que os Presley e seus familiares não tinham condições financeiras de terem uma vitrola. Acredita-se então que a verdadeira intenção do jovem era ouvir sua voz gravada e ao exibi-la para o dono do estúdio, Sam Phillips, descobrir se ela era musical e vendável.
Nada aconteceria e mais uma vez Elvis iria ao Sun, dessa vez em 4 de janeiro de 1954, para gravar mais duas faixas. Ele seria dispensado novamente, mas graças à secretária de Phillips, Marion Keisker, teria seu nome lembrado quando o chefe admitira estar procurando algo novo e inédito, uma mistura do ritmo negro com a voz branca.
Um pequeno ensaio em 25 de junho provou ser infrutífero, mas quando o cantor se juntou a Scotty Moore, Bill Black e D.J. Fontana em 5 de julho de 1954 uma certa mágica aconteceu: a partir de um improviso nasceu "That's All Right", a inovação que Phillips procurava e que se tornaria um sucesso local em seu lançamento 14 dias depois.
Não demorou muito para que Elvis Presley se transformasse em um nome de peso na música dos estados sulistas e passasse a se apresentar como atração principal em shows famosos como o The Louisiana Hayride e o Grand Ole Opry pelos próximos dois anos.
Na segunda metade de 1955, seus singles começaram a chegar às paradas nacionais, com "I Forgot to Remember Forget" indo para o número 1, o que convenceu a RCA a comprar o contrato do cantor. Presley e o Rock 'n' Roll ainda eram sucessos não comprovados, mas a partir de "Heartbreak Hotel", primeiro single pela nova gravadora, a história mudaria completamente.
"A Boy from Tupelo - The Complete 1953-55 Recordings" traz uma quase completa jornada em áudio por esse período de ascensão ao disponibilizar todos os Masters gravados por Elvis de 1953 a 1955 e a maior parte dos takes alternativos dos mesmos, alguns até então inéditos.
Surpreendentemente, a pesquisa das gravadoras foi capaz de encontrar as fitas originais com os Masters do Sun para "That's All Right" e "Blue Moon of Kentucky", possibilitando que pela primeira vez desde o lançamento em 1954 os fãs pudessem ouvir as versões consideradas perdidas, uma vez que a partir de 1956 somente os remasters da RCA foram vendidos.
Destacam-se também os remixes feitos pela gravadora em 1955 e 1956 sobre o material original do Sun, faixas inéditas até então e a versão de 1965 de "Tomorrow Night" com novos overdubs adicionados à gravação original.
No setor de takes alternativos estão presentes raridades que qualquer fã tem a obrigação de colecionar, como os sete takes de "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone (Slow Version)" lançados anteriormente somente no LP duplo "Sunrise", de 1988. Todos os takes existentes das gravações no Sun são apresentados em transferências a partir das fitas originais, sendo que a maior parte nunca havia sido remasterizada desde o LP duplo "The Complete Sun Sessions", de 1987.
As versões ao vivo no terceiro CD não apresentam muitas coisas novas, sendo que a maioria já estava no mercado há anos em bootlegs, mas é a primeira vez que são reunidas com qualidade e de forma oficial. Os itens inéditos e mais raros aqui são as faixas gravadas em 5 de março de 1955 no Louisiana Hayride, as quais foram transferidas digitalmente de um acetato em péssimas condições que foi destruído no processo.
O box da FTD também traz um livro de 512 páginas com material majoritariamente inédito. Das 500 fotos disponibilizadas, 200 são vistas aqui pela primeira vez, bem como boa parte das informações sobre como Elvis saiu do anonimato para o estrelato nacional em menos de um ano e meio. Tanto o livro quanto os CDs foram editados em um longo processo dispendioso iniciado em 2007, o que fez com que este trabalho tivesse sua venda limitada a 3 mil cópias.

Cinco anos após a colaboração com a FTD, a Sony Legacy decidiu lançar sua própria versão devido ao sucesso da anterior. O trabalho trouxe praticamente o mesmo material presente no box de 2012, retirando 15 faixas e adicionando a até então inédita rendição ao vivo de "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" em 29 de outubro de 1955. De 512 páginas, o livro foi reduzido para meras 120 com calendários e uma espécie de diário de viagens acompanhando Elvis em seus shows.
