Em meados de 2018, fãs de Elvis ao redor do mundo já comemoravam o quinquagésimo aniversário do '68 Comeback Special e esperavam grandes homenagens pelo feito que é lembrado até hoje por sua importância cultural, as mudanças que causou no entretenimento desde então e, graças a Elvis, a invenção das apresentações acústicas.
Existiram muitos bootlegs das apresentações desde 1978 até 1999, quando a FTD assumiu a responsabilidade de trazer tais conteúdos antes lançados com áudio ruim ou retirados de fontes danificadas para o público de forma oficial, mas ela nunca traria todo o conteúdo disponível, inclusive ensaios, em um único trabalho. Isso, por incrível que pareça, só foi feito pela RCA/Sony/BMG para o aniversário de 50 anos do programa, em um box com 5 CDs e 2 DVDs vendido em 30 de novembro de 2018.
O box certamente seria um sucesso de vendas - e foi - entre os fãs, mas ainda faltava trazer Elvis para os olhos do público em geral. Pensando nisso, os executivos da NBC-TV tiveram a ideia de recriar o cenário do programa de 1968 e reunir alguns dos mais famosos artistas da atualidade para interpretar as músicas que fizeram de Elvis o Rei do Rock. Gravado em outubro de 2018, o programa trouxe trechos do '68 Comeback Special original com Elvis cantando seus clássicos em meio a performances modernizadas nas vozes dos artistas participantes da atração. Embora não fizessem parte da transmissão de 1968, alguns hits posteriores também foram interpretados com nova roupagem.
O CD com a trilha do programa foi às lojas em 15 de fevereiro de 2019 sob o título "The Best of the '68 Comeback Special". Porém, apenas uma das 19 faixas do trabalho traz os artistas do programa televisivo cantando com Elvis. Das outras 18, quinze são rendições feitas durante os shows para o especial de 1968 já bem conhecidas do público, apenas com pequenas edições e remixagens. As três restantes são o take 2 de "A Little Less Conversation", da trilha do filme "Live a Little, Love a Little" de 1968, e os Masters de "Suspicious Minds" e "Burning Love" com pequenas remixagens.

The Best of the '68 Comeback Special é o 464º trabalho audiofônico de Elvis (incluindo LPs, CDs, singles e EPs). Ele contém 15 faixas gravadas para o '68 Comeback Special, três singles setentistas e uma regravação de "If I Can Dream" de 2019. O CD serviu de propaganda para o especial de TV "Elvis All Star Tribute", que foi ao ar pela NBC-TV em 17 de fevereiro de 2019.
