How Great Thou Art é o vigésimo terceiro LP de Elvis, seu 24º pela RCA e 51º trabalho audiofônico (incluindo singles e EPs), além de ser seu segundo LP Gospel. As sessões de gravação aconteceram no RCA Studio B em Nashville, Tennessee, entre 25 e 28 de maio de 1966.

Em meados dos anos 1960, a exposição de Elvis nas rádios era baixa e por muitas vezes nulas, devido ao fato de que seus LPs de música contemporânea eram escassos naquele período e trilhas sonoras nunca haviam sido bem vindas nas estações. Seu álbum Gospel anterior, "His Hand in Mine", de 1960, tinha sido um sucesso de vendas para a RCA, o que levou o Coronel a perceber que, como álbuns religiosos eram tocados sistematicamente em todas as estações na Páscoa e Natal, nada melhor do que produzir um disco do tipo para reconquistar o espaço.

Outro ponto decisivo foi o fato de que as rádios já não se interessavam em rocks antigos e Elvis lançara seu último trabalho não-trilha sonora com material contemporâneo há quase 5 anos (não contando "Elvis For Everyone!", de 1965, por ser uma compilação de sucessos anteriores). Isso, aliado ao declínio das vendas das trilhas sonoras, fez com que o cantor e seu agente adotassem a ideia por completo.

How Great Thou Art seria de fato o primeiro disco não-trilha sonora de Presley desde "Pot Luck With Elvis" em 1962, e seu primeiro álbum a não incluir quaisquer gravações de trilhas sonoras desde "His Hand In Mine", em 1960. Este disco também introduziu o trabalho do produtor Felton Jarvis, que continuaria com Elvis pelo resto de sua carreira.

Enquanto as sessões de gravação progrediam, Elvis rejeitou muitas das músicas planejadas para o projeto, substituindo-as por canções de sua preferência ou sugestões dos seus músicos. Cinco delas estavam em domínio público, o que possibilitou que fossem lançadas pela Elvis Presley Music e arranjadas por Elvis. Outras sete músicas foram concluídas para o álbum, e a última faixa trouxe "Crying in the Chapel", gravada durante as sessões para "His Hand in Mine" em 1960. As sessões também produziram o single "Love Letters", dois lados B, e duas músicas adicionais que seriam acrescentadas ao LP de "Spinout" no fim de 1966.

O álbum alcançou a 18ª posição no Top Pop Albums e foi certificado como Ouro em 16 de fevereiro de 1968, Platina e 2x Platina em 27 de março de 1992, e 3x Platina em 13 de outubro de 2010 pela RIAA. O trabalho ganhou um Grammy Award na categoria de Melhor Performance Sacra de 1967. Em 2008, a Sony Music relançou o disco em versão remasterizada e com três faixas bônus ("You'll Never Walk Alone", "We Call On Him" e "Who Am I?"). O disco foi revendido em 2010 pela FTD, desta vez em um CD duplo cheio de outtakes.

Em 2016 a FTD lançou um livro falando da ligação de Elvis com o Gospel e detalhando as 100 melhores músicas do estilo gravadas por ele. O trabalho incluía um CD com 30 faixas do gênero, entre elas o programa completo do Domingo de Ramos de 1967, 19 de março, transmitido pela rádio KVIO de Sedona, Arizona, com a promoção do álbum "How Great Thou Art" através da reprodução de 8 de suas 13 faixas.
